Beetles are the largest known species. They have an ability to adapt to any environment. One of the most important features of a beetle is their elytra. The elytra is a hard exoskeleton covering over wings that protect the beetle. Beetles have so many known species, unknown species, and new species being found frequently. The estimate of the total number of beetles, reported or not, is between 5 and 8 million. Not every beetle is considered to be a pest.
Beetles are associated with all kinds of different plants, beetles are also found in logs or under barks, in fungi, in mud, in decaying plant and animal matter, in water, in stored food, in bird and mammal nests, and in termite nests. Many beetles live deep in the soil or in decaying leaf litter on the ground. Other beetles live under rocks or in caves.
