Carpet Beetles must be taken seriously. The adult Carpet Beetles are similar in appearance to the Trogoderma Beetles, but the Carpet Beetles are much larger and are a solid black or very dark brown color. They are about 3 to 5 mm in length, flat, oval, and very compact with no separation between the thorax (chest area) and the elytra (hard exoskeleton covering). The carpet beetle larvae are up to 8 mm in length which is some of the largest of the carpet beetles. The larvae are very dark brown and consist mainly of wide, dark bands around each body segment. There are very long, golden hairs extending out the back of the Carpet Beetle.
For Carpet Beetles you should pay special attention to dark, undisturbed, protected places, as well as, in places where lint can and is collected as in behind baseboards, in air ducts, stuffing of furniture, bristles of old paint brushes, carpets and luggage. Be sure to inspect animal nests as well. To control Carpet Beetles, you must thoroughly inspect the entire structure.
