HOW to GET RID of CARPET BEETLE

Carpet Beetles must be taken seriously. The adult carpet beetles are similar in appearance to the Trogoderma Beetles, but the carpet beetles are much larger and are a solid black or very dark brown color. They are about 3 to 5 mm in length, flat, oval, and very compact with no separation between the thorax (chest area) and the elytra (hard exoskeleton covering). The carpet beetle larvae are up to 8 mm in length which is some of the largest of the carpet beetles. The larvae are very dark brown and consist mainly of wide, dark bands around each body segment. There is very long, golden hairs extending out the back.

CARPET BEETLE INSPECTION

For carpet beetles you should pay special attention to dark, undisturbed, protected places, as well as, in places where lint can and is collected as in behind baseboards, in air ducts, stuffing of furniture, bristles of old paint brushes, carpets and luggage. Be sure to inspect animal nests as well. To control carpet beetles, you must thoroughly inspect the entire structure.

Carpet Beetle Prevention:

There are few steps that you can take to prevent further infestation.

  1. Dry clean or launder before storing woolens and other fabrics for a long periods of time because they will eat through the fabric and will cause damage to them. Cleaning not just removes sweat/moisture odors but it also kills any eggs and larvae that might be alive.
  2. Be sure to remove all nests before winter
  3. Screens should be installed around the windows and doors
  4. Make sure the screens are tightly fitted to make sure adult carpet beetles cannot enter.
  5. Clean frequently. Make sure to vacuum to remove debris of animal hair and lint that will serve as food to carpet beetles.
  6. When infested articles are found, be sure to throw them away to prevent and control the infestation of carpet beetles.

CARPET BEETLE CONTROL METHODS

This type of monitoring is to know how major the infestation is and we suggest that you set up glue board traps (XLURE RTU COMBO TRAP). This trap has pheromones that insects are attracted to. It has non-drying glue with a high tolerance to dust particles. Place them in the corners of your home and monitor the activities of carpet beetles. Place them wherever you will find them such as around windows and doors to catch them when they fly into your home. Once you have found how severe and where the infestation takes place you will need to use these treatments below:

Crack and Crevice/Void Treatment:

This treatment is to be used in cracks and crevice and even voids in your home where beetles might enter or live. This treatment can be used with liquid spray (MASTERLINE BIFENTHRIN, DEMON WP, CYPER WP, CYNOFF WP), dust (DRIONE DUST, DELTA DUST), aerosol (JK27 RESIDUAL,V ONE PYRETHRUM , CY-KICK AEROSOL). While using a liquid spray, we suggest that you use a hand gallon sprayer (CHAPIN 1 GALLON SPRAYER). For liquid spray (MASTERLINE BIFENTHRIN, DEMON WP, CYPER WP, CYNOFF WP), you will use the amount instructed on the product label, you will just a pinpoint nozzle from a hand gallon sprayer (CHAPIN 1 GALLON SPRAYER) and spray into the cracks and crevices for long lasting effect. You will have to spray around door frames, window frames, window sills, cracks on the moldings in the walls, walls, cabinets and pantries, and anywhere that has a crack and crevice and the beetles might become through. Void treatments are used when the area that is infested or needs to be treated cannot be reached. If that is the case, then you will need make an access (ex: to drill a hole into the wall near the infested area or removing an electric outlet covering) and using the liquid spray (MASTERLINE BIFENTHRIN, DEMON WP, CYPER WP, CYNOFF WP), spray the empty spaces in the walls. Be cautious when using a liquid spray around electric objects because it is a liquid product. In a crack and crevice and void treatment using dust (DRIONE DUST, DELTA DUST), we suggest that you use a duster (BELLOW DUSTER, CENTROBULB DUSTER) with an extension tip.?Using the suggested amount instructed on the product label on the dust (DRIONE DUST, DELTA DUST), fill the duster halfway with the dust and apply the dust into cracks and crevices. DO NOT OVERUSE DUST. Do not apply dust where children or pets may touch. Do not apply it directly into the hole, but the around the void inside because there is a chance that the dust might blow out. Using an aerosol product (JK27 RESIDUAL,V ONE PYRETHRUM , CY-KICK AEROSOL) for a crack and crevice treatment, apply the suggested amounts using a straw attached to crack and crevices in cabinets and pantries, wall voids, around window and door frames, under sidings and in machinery.

Indoor Treatment:

We do not recommend that you use a liquid spray to treat indoors because you will need to treat the entire carpet of your home. We suggest that you use an aerosol product (JK27 RESIDUAL,V ONE PYRETHRUM , CY-KICK AEROSOL). Using the instructed directions, spray the whole entire carpet in your home and if you can, leave the house for a few hours. Once you come back, you should steam vacuum the whole entire house again and dispose the bag. If you do not want to steam vacuum, we suggest a fogger (V CLEAN-OUT FOGGER). Use as directed on the label and leave the home for a couple of hours; and once you have came back, make sure to vacuum the area you have treated and dispose the bag as well.

Barrier Treatment:

A barrier treatment is used when you want to make a zone around your home. These treatments is by applying a liquid spray (MASTERLINE BIFENTHRIN, DEMON WP, CYPER WP, CYNOFF WP) using a hand gallon sprayer (CHAPIN 1 GALLON SPRAYER), and granule (BIFEN GRANULES, TALSTAR EZ GRANULAR) using a hand spreader (HANDLE SPREADER ). These are sometimes called a perimeter treatment, where soil areas are adjacent to a structure as well as a portion of the lower foundation wall next to the soil treated. Using the amount instructed for the liquid spray, use a mist nozzle setting and treat the soil surrounding your home. For the granule application (BIFEN GRANULES, TALSTAR EZ GRANULAR), use the amount instructed on the label and using the spreader (HANDLE SPREADER), spread a band around the structure of your home and then irrigate the lawn to activate the granules.
