Drain flies are also known as moth flies, sewer flies, and filters flies. Their body and wings are covered with abundant hairs. When you crush a drain fly they will leave behind a powdery smudge. Adult drain flies range from 1/16-1/4'' in size and their color will vary from yellow to brown/black. Adult female drain flies will lay their eggs on the surface of gelatinous film that are found in drains and sewers. Fruit flies are small compared to other flies. They are about 1/8'' in length and that is including the wings. Fruit flies, unlike other flies, have bright red eyes and their body colors are light yellow to tan. They are found most at late summer and early fall where they infest in harvest fruits.
Drain flies can be found in moist, shady areas. They can also be found on walls near drains, under potted plants, in bird feeders and baths, in moss, in clogged roof gutters, under air conditioners, in thick mulch, or on wet ground areas. Fruit flies are found throughout in homes, food processing plants, warehouses, grocery stores, wineries, restaurants, decaying vegetation and overripe fruit, leftover beer or soft drinks.
