The German cockroach is one of the most common roaches found in apartment houses, restaurants, and hotels. German cockroaches (eggs included), are "brought in", usually on man's belongings, luggage, boxes or packages. All it takes, is bringing in one egg capsule, six months later you do have an infestation.
Adults are 1/2 inch- 5/8 inch long, light to medium brown with 2 dark distinctive stripes behind the head. The young (nymphs) are wingless, smaller and much darker in color, with a light stripe on their backs.
Will eat anything, will stay close to food and water source.
Females produce one egg capsule every 3-4 weeks. Each capsule contains 25-45 eggs. The female will carry the egg capsule with her until it is ready to hatch. The young(nymphs) will be able to breed in as little as 36 days. Adult German roaches can live up to one year These roaches are mostly active at night .
If they are seen during the day, it is usually because their hiding places are overcrowded due to a large population or there is a shortage of food and water supply.
Any crack or crevice located near a source of food and/or water is prime harborage, and they spend about 75% of their time in such harborages.
First instar nymphs require a crack of about 1/32" whereas, adults require a crack of about 3/16" in width.
Infestations are generally found in kitchens and bathrooms, but can inhabit other areas if there is a heavy population or you have run them into each other with the repellent effect of insecticides.
It is one of the most challenging to manage and eliminate.
To accurately and completely eliminate these roaches you need to attack them from several tools using baits, dusts, growth regulators and pheromone traps.
They have the most eggs produced, shortest development cycle, best survival rate of the young, and the most adaptive feeding habits of most of the roaches. Because of this "high reproductive potential" they have a greater ability to develop resistance against insecticides.
The technology of the pest control market has switched to an integrated pest management like baiting ,dusting, and the use of insect growth regulators and pheromone trapsagainst the German roach, as opposed to just using a residual or contact insecticide either in an aerosol form or liquid form.
However in restaurants, you may have to still spray with a residual insecticide such as : Orthene instead of baits.
We encourage you to call us for recommendations, in that we have had a long history of helping restaurants solve their problem, but needs to be handled on a individual basis.
Another product that is recommended for restaurants is : Mop Up Boric Acid Insecticide
A mop rinse insecticide that leaves an odorless, invisible residue which cockroaches cannot detect.
The products we recommend have not had a resistant problem.
We also carry Maxforce FC Magnum Roach Bait Gel -Fipronil.
The active ingredient in Maxforce FC Magnum, Fipronil, provides a unique mode of action that works through both ingestion and contact, knocking down roaches and ants that eat or simply touch the bait. Either way, one contaminated roach or ant kills many others where they live and breed. The Domino Effect¢ç still achieves population control, but with faster visible results.
The application is very simple and easy, coming in a syring. The gel formulation enables you to place the material into cracks and crevices and harboraging places.
Typical harboraging areas for German Roaches and places for treatment of Maxforce Roach Gel:
Before treating any areas it is best to first take a flashlight and check these types of areas for nesting sites. You will be looking for their excrement droppings(looks like black pepper).
You may also want to use a aerosol with pryethrin like JK27 Residual 15 oz or V One Pyrethrum Aerosol sprayed to "flush-out" roaches out of these harboraging places .
These pyrethin areosols will kill on contact, and serve you to find out where the German Cockroaches are nesting.
Once you have determined where the roaches are nesting, it may be easier to know where to apply the Max Force gel bait.
Behind anything hanging on the wall, such as pictures, clocks, posters, etc.
Behind, next to, and under the stove.
In the corners up under the sink and other cabinets.
In stored paper bags and boxes.
Around pipes, cords, and cables that come out of the wall.
Behind and under bathroom fixtures.
Behind the medicine cabinet and vanity.
In any cracks or crevices around shelves or wood trim.
Each roach feeding on Maxforce Roach Gel will kill up to 40 other roaches via droppings and dead bodies.
Roaches are cannibalistic and will eat other dead or dying roaches.
The roaches are not social insects like ants and termites, they do not carry the bait back to feed the young.
When baiting is important to re- bait in the areas where the the roaches are taking the bait. Paying attention to this will speed up the process.
Advion Roach Bait Arena and or Maxforce Roach Bait Stations are both useful as a roach bait. The use of the roach stations are slower acting than the gel forms, but will last for several months without drying out.
Advion Arena Roach Bait is the newest on the market with great results.
2. Insect Growth Regulators for Cockroaches
Gentrol Aerosol (IGR) Gentrol IGR Liquid 1oz Gentrol Point Source
Using insect growth regulators like Gentrol Aerosol breaks the cycle.
It attacks the male nymph roach(mutating reproductive abilities) and causes the pregnant female to consume the bait when she would normally not want to consume food during part of her pregnancy. We carry Gentrol in the aerosol form,
Gentrol liquid form, and Gentrol point source form.
3. Cockroach Traps
Another important tool, would be the use of roach traps with a pheremone to lure them inside the trap: Victor Pheromone Roach Trap is and excellent roach trap.
These traps are excellent for monitoring tools as well.
4. Other Aerosols and "Bombs" to Kill Cockroaches
First we recommend using D-Force HPX Aerosol in all the cracks and crevices as well as behind cabinets, under refrigerators, behind stoves, ovens and dishwashers, if needed for the "initial kill", if needed.
At this point you can use insect growth inhibitors such as the Gentrol Aerosol, Gentrol Liquid or Gentrol Point Sources, treating area and the cracks and crevices without contamination.
Bait 10-14 days, then apply Maxforce Roach Bait Gel in numerous small bait placements in cracks and crevices in cabinets and drawers, also place behind the cabinets, under refrigerators, behind stoves, ovens, and dishwashers.
The D-Force HPX Aerosol is intended for an initial knockdown when there is a need to cut out a percentage of the population immediately, the Maxforce Roach Bait Gel is intended to really cut into the population over the following two weeks, with the Gentrol Insect Growth Regulator helping the baiting and breaking into the cycle. We have combined many of these products inside kits, saving you money.
You can find this at: Roaches Kits V Clean-Out Fogger 6 oz
Aerosol "bombs" such as V TECH CLEAR OUT so commonly referred to are actually total release aerosol cans.
They are very popular because they are perhaps the easiest way to kill exposed roaches without much effort, just push the button and leave the premises for a couple of hours.
Unfortunately, "bombs" do not contact many roaches that are well hidden and they have no residual killing power.
