Mice&Rat Baiting Tip

  • Rats tend to be cautious and mice are more curious.
  • Rats tend to eat most of their food at one time.
  • Mice while being "nibblers" eating many times at different places.
  • It is important to remove their food sources-but do not disturb the rodent habitat,
until a complete knockdown and elimination occurs before they could move to another area.
  • A successful rodent control program includes a combination of baiting and trapping for the highest rate of success.
  • You may also want to consider integrating your program ,with exclusion techniques and a general cleanup, removal of their hiding places(harboraging areas.)
  • If the population is large, you will want to begin with a high quality rodent bait, to quickly knock down a population and prevent rapid growth.
  • There are different types of baits to choose from: blocks, pellets, seeds ; each rodent population is different in their preferences, so a little of each is a good choice in bait selections.

When baiting intially , try not to disturb their original habitats or they may run to another area.

After baiting has begun, continue with sanitation procedures, food source removal, and harborage removal to ensure additional rodents from nearby areas are not attracted to your location.

Resistant, tamper proof bait stations : Rat and Mice sized

Trapper T Rex Rat SizeTrapper T Rex Mice Size, Protecta Mouse Bait

  • The  Trapper T Rex Snap Trap for mice (comes in rat size as well) will fit in the Protecta Bait Stations to help keep non targeted animals and children away from the traps.

You may need more snap traps than you think is warranted. Check the mouse snap traps daily. If nothing happens in a couple of days, move the traps to a new location. Mice are not afraid of new things or bothered by the smell of humans or dead mice on traps.
Rodenticides should be placed in areas of rodent activity.

  • As with traps, keep monitoring the results, placing more bait out when needed.

We carry two types of bait:

MULTIPLE FEED BAIT and SINGLE FEED BAIT.

Multiple feed bait requires several feedings to receive a lethal dosage, and single feed bait requires one feeding.

Rodenticides work equally well on mice and rats.

The advantage of multiple feed baits are that they are less expensive and less risk of secondary poisoining ( e.g., a dog consuming the carcasses of rodents).

  • It is a national law and guideline to use resistant-tamper proof bait stations in areas where children or pets could access.

Odor Problems-Rodent

Bac-A-Zap Odor Eliminator For the elimination of malodors caused by: Urine, Feces, Vomit,Decaying Organic Matter, Skunk odor.

A rodent bait that has no secondary poisoning potential at all is called:  Fastrac Blox

It has no secondary poisoning potential, because the mode of action is not an anti-coagulant.
Fastrac is the fastest of the single feed baits, requiring less bait.
However with this product(Fastrac), an andidote is not available, so the use of Tamper Proof bait staitions are important.

Eliminate the rat's natural food source as much as possible. It is much easier to introduce rat bait to the population with less food choices.

Space baits between 15 and 50 feet apart for rats( mice bait placements are much closer).
As with mice bait placement techniques use closer spacing of bait placements in a heavy infestation, placing bait between their harboraging areas and food sources.
Protecta Rats Bait, Rat Kits, Protecta Landsscape Bait Stations

It is very helpful to use rat size bait stations to encourage feeding. They provide the rat with an attractive , protective feeding area.

Once these bait stations are placed, avoid moving them. Some rats have a reaction against moved objects.
Of course after a time, and the rats are not taking the bait , it would warrant moving the station.

Rats consume much more bait than mice. Each rat may consume 1 ounce or more nightly. Keep plenty of bait available to refill the bait stations.

In damp conditions use weather resistant blox/block forms.
If necessary tie down the bait in order to prevent them from washing away.
